Simon Ingram at Dunedin Public Art Gallery

Simon Ingram's Pictorial fictions - painting from Frances Hodgkins' latent space at Dunedine Public Art Gallery explores the evolving relationship between painting and technology through a new body of work inspired by Frances Hodgkins. Using a custom machine-learning model trained on 19 Hodgkins paintings from the Dunedin Public Art Gallery collection, Ingram transforms AI-generated compositions into meticulously hand-painted works, creating a dialogue between historical painting and contemporary computational systems.

Bringing together machine-led processes and painterly intuition, the exhibition considers how artists have long engaged with new technologies while questioning ideas of authorship, creativity and image-making in the age of artificial intelligence. Pictorial fictions is on view from 13 June to 18 October 2026.
