Now Representing Yuki Kihara

Gow Langsford Gallery is pleased to announce its representation of internationally acclaimed interdisciplinary artist Yuki Kihara.

Kihara works across photography, performance, video, sculpture and textiles. Her practice centres Pacific worldviews and engages critically with climate change, colonial histories, gender and Indigenous knowledge systems. Her work is supported by an extensive exhibition history in Aotearoa New Zealand and internationally.

"Yuki Kihara is one of the most interesting and compelling artists working in the Pacific today. Her practice is intellectually rigorous, visually powerful and deeply engaged with urgent global conversations, while remaining grounded in Sāmoan knowledge systems and community collaboration. We are honoured to welcome Yuki to the gallery and look forward to supporting the next chapter of her remarkable career."

- Anna Jackson, Director, Gow Langsford Gallery

Gow Langsford is also pleased to be offering works from Kihara's most recent series Woven Memories (2026) ahead of her debut solo exhibition with the gallery in early 2027. These first six works respond to Cyclone Evan (2012) which carved a destructive path across the Pacific, leaving a lasting mark on the histories of Wallis and Futuna, Sāmoa, American Sāmoa, Tonga, Fiji and Aotearoa New Zealand. Drawing on infrared satellite imagery, the series transforms meteorological records into woven acts of remembrance. The project remains ongoing, with further works yet to come responding to more recent cyclones including Malia, Vaianu and Sinlaku, which have impacted communities across the Pacific.

These works are developed in parallel to her series Tala o le tau: Stories from the weather (2025-2026), which comprises traditional pandanus mats embroidered with satellite imagery of tropical cyclones in and around Sāmoa over the past two decades. Created in collaboration with the Moata'a Aualuma Community on Sāmoa's Upolu Island, the works reflect Kihara's commitment to Pacific perspectives and collective knowledge systems.

Works from the series have been exhibited at Gow Langsford Auckland City and Gus Fisher Gallery, with multiple international presentations scheduled for 2026. Selected works have also been acquired by the New Zealand Maritime Museum Hui Te Ananui a Tangaroa, Auckland Art Gallery Toi o Tāmaki and Art Gallery of New South Wales.
Kihara's first solo exhibition with Gow Langsford in 2027 will present a new body of work building on these themes.
