As well as the three works presented in our In that stone, in that cyclone, in that leaf exhibition, five more woven pandanus mats from Yuki Kihara’s Tala o le Tau series are currently on display at Gus Fisher Gallery.
Tala o le Tau (named after Kihara’s series) explores themes of climate crisis, matrilineal histories and indigenous knowledge systems. Kihara’s vibrantly coloured mats (made in collaboration with women from Moata’a Aualuma Community) are displayed alongside Angela Tiatia’s The Dark Current (2023) and accompanied by an audio of a weather report read in Sāmoan and English which details the effects of 2020 cyclone Wasi that swept through Sāmoa.
“Faced with the reality of increasingly frequent and devastating weather events that threaten life and livelihoods in the Pacific, these artists explore the relationship between gender, creative practice and indigenous knowledge systems as a tool to navigate into an uncertain future.”
The works will be on view at Gus Fisher Gallery until 30th August 2025 and more information can be found here.
