Brett Graham’s Wastelands (2024) is now on display at Auckland Art Gallery Toi o Tāmaki, located on the ground floor in the Taimoana | Coastlines: Art in Aotearoa exhibition.
Graham’s sculpture explores themes of colonial history, ecological concerns, and the ongoing relationship between Māori communities and the land – especially those stories rooted in his rohe of Waikato. Installed as an immersive experience alongside a new video work Whangamārino (2025), the work offers perspectives on cultural identity, environmental stewardship, and the enduring impact of colonial-era policies.
Wastelands was originally commissioned for the 60th Venice Biennale 2024 and was acquired by the Auckland Art Gallery Toi o Tāmaki earlier this year thanks to the support of the Patrons of Auckland Art Gallery and the Gallery's collection development budget. Taimoana | Coastlines: Art in Aotearoa is free to visit and will be on display until February 2026.
