A new feature in Uptown Magazine celebrates the return of one of Auckland’s most iconic public artworks. Renowned artist Sara Hughes has reimagined her expansive Magma mural on the Watercare reservoir in the Uptown precinct, creating Magma 2, a 512 sqm abstract “volcanic scape” that draws on the city’s geology and history to energise the streetscape. The mural, one of the largest in Aotearoa, has become a bold visual landmark for the neighbourhood, bringing renewed colour and a sense of place to the area and reinforcing Hughes’ role as a leading figure in contemporary public art.
