A major cultural initiative is underway to safeguard and revive the legacy of Colin McCahon, one of Aotearoa’s most significant modern painters, after concerns emerged that the artist’s digital archive, cataloguing more than 1,800 works, is on the brink of collapse. McCahon’s family are seeking up to $1.5 million to rebuild the ageing database, enhance research access and help locate “missing” paintings that have long eluded public record. The effort highlights both the fragility and importance of preserving the artistic heritage of a figure whose work remains central to New Zealand’s visual culture.
