Brett Graham - The Walters Prize 2024 Finalist

The Walters Prize is Aotearoa New Zealand’s largest and most prestigious contemporary art award. Established in 2002 and now in its 11th iteration, the prize showcases and promotes contemporary art, and has, since its inception, shaped emergent discussion about contemporary New Zealand art.

Gallery artist Brett Graham is one of the four finalists and presents a new work which reinterprets work from his major exhibition Tai Moana Tai Tangata. Ka Wheeke (2024) reexamines the civic monuments and historical legacy of colonial aggressions in the Waikato War of 1863-64.

The Walters Prize 2024 is currently on view at Auckland Art Gallery Toi o Tāmaki until Sunday 20 October.
