If you’ve been walking the streets of Ponsonby/Grey Lynn recently, you may have come across Owen Dippie’s incredible mural of Max Gimblett. Located on Pollen Street, the mural was completed over the holiday period. On the location, Dippie said, “It was essential for this piece to be located in Auckland City – Max's birthplace. The wall is located a stone’s throw from my studio, so I had been visualising an artwork on it for some time. It felt right for this portrait.”
The mural depicts Max stunningly, with his likeness set in a distinctive quatrefoil. Dippie states, “I was introduced to Max's work as a young student and was instantly impacted. Throughout my career Max has been a constant source of inspiration. I respect his dedication to his practice and this mural is in honour of that. I believe in giving people their flowers while they can smell them. Thank you, Max.” This heartfelt tribute to Max is a wonderful addition to public art in the city.
