Gow Langsford is proud to announce the representation of Matthew Browne.
Known primarily for his abstract paintings characterised by bold forms, decisive lines and a striking use of colour, the British-born painter has established a reputation for himself since immigrating to New Zealand in the 1980s.
Director Anna Jackson notes: "Following the success of his exhibition Moment of Tangency earlier this year, we are delighted to formally announce an ongoing relationship with Matthew. Working within the parameters of what might seem to be hard edge abstraction, his interest in automatic drawing allows the operation of chance to help determine a work’s final composition. There is an element of risk and the potential for a high failure rate in his experimentation of colour and form. The resulting compositions have an intensity and a fragility; where even a small change could disturb their unique equilibrium."
In 2013, Matthew Browne established the Browne School of Art in Grey Lynn, Auckland, an independent art school aiding teenagers and adults in courses ranging from painting, printmaking and drawing. Browne has work represented in private collections in New Zealand, UK, Australia, Denmark, Singapore, Canada and USA. Public collections include the Parliamentary Collection, Wellington, The Royal Overseas League, London and The James Wallace Charitable Trust, Auckland.
In 2005 he was the joint winner of the People’s Choice Award at The Wallace Art Awards and in 2008 was awarded a Merit at the New Zealand Painting and Printmaking Awards in Hamilton. In 2016 he was awarded the First Runner’s Up Award at the Wallace Art Awards. and at the National Contemporary Art Awards, at the Museum of Waikato 2019, he was awarded Merit for his painting Anecdoche. In 2022, he was again announced as a finalist for the National Contemporary Art Awards.
