Fragile Construction: Gregor Kregar

Gregor Kregar’s diverse and expansive career has received attention and critical acclaim for over two decades. Curator Rhana Devenport describes Kregar’s artwork as ‘invitational, spatially alert and socially complex.’ Always generous to the viewer, Kregar’s installations are materially rich, displaying his mastery in different media. In his body of new work, Fragile Construction, Kregar transforms a series of tools into fragile, cast lead-crystal counterparts.  The familiar spade, hammer or construction hat take on an absurdity in glass. Stripped of their functionality, Kregar questions our progress by marking its fragility. This body of work continues Kregar’s long-standing interest in transforming mundane and aesthetically invisible objects into the focus of our attention.

Kregar holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts (Academy of Fine Arts, University of Ljubljana, 1996) and a Masters of Fine Arts (Elam School of Fine Arts, University of Auckland, 1999). His work is held in significant public and private collections nationally and internationally including Te Papa Tongarewa Museum of New Zealand, The Auckland Art Gallery Toi o Tāmaki and Christchurch Art Gallery Te Puna o Waiwhetū. Highlights of his career include the Cairo Biennale and the 29th Ljubljana Biennale in 2011; numerous public, permanent installations including multiple sites at the Christchurch International Airport, 2012; and the 2015 Southern Way McClelland Commission, Melbourne.
