Unique Screenprints 2024-2025: Max Gimblett
Gow Langsford is pleased to present a series of new unique screenprints by Max Gimblett. These large-scale works are the latest in the evolution of his screenprint practice, created in his signature iconic quatrefoil shape – both deeply recognisable and quintessentially him.
In these works, Gimblett uses a vibrant colour palette, bright yellows, pinks and turquoises alongside his classic gold, silver and black. There is an overall uplifting feel to the series, with titles such as Joy, Beauty, Grace and Jazz lending to the positive energy. Each work is printed using silk screen ink, layering gestures to build depth on the paper. Gimblett then marks each work individually with water-based size, gilding these gestures with a variety of precious metal leaf.
These metallic gestures can be seen to escape the borders of the quatrefoil shape, spilling across the paper to create drips, raised textures and in some cases, vigorous splatters. There is a sense of immediacy to the gestures, the artist’s hand so visible in each unique work. Gimblett is well-known for his blending of Eastern and Western artistic traditions, with these gestures highlighting his ongoing engagement with calligraphy and spontaneous Buddhist Zen brushwork.
Born in New Zealand, Gimblett has been primarily based in New York since 1972. He continues to exhibit regularly in both locations.
