3 x 1: A Series of Photographic Exhibitions
Gow Langsford Gallery presents 3 x 1 a series of photography exhibitions. Throughout the series photographers Bruce Jarvis, Simon Devitt and Patrick Reynolds will each exhibit week long exhibitions.
The series begins with Rock Legends (25 - 29 May) a series of works by photographer Bruce Jarvis. The series includes classic onstage images of Rolling Stone Mick Jagger, guitar god Eric Clapton, Joan Armatrading, Led Zeppelin, Frank Zappa and Bob Dylan, caught in the act of presenting a flower to a front row admirer. His collection of photographs of rock stars in New Zealand is unparalleled and the exhibition provides a unique insight into New Zealand's music history.
In Nature is a Maybe (1 - 5 June) emerging photographer Simon Devitt brings together a collection of photographs that detail the spaces we inhabit. While working largely within the realm of traditional architectural photography, Devitt's images exploit the physical features of his subjects in often unpredictable ways. By highlighting their formal elements he creates elegant compositions that can seem at odds with the true function of the space portrayed.
Concluding the series is renowned Auckland photographer Patrick Reynolds. In Say Yes (8 -12 June) Reynolds explores the possibilities of contemporary photographic processes in an attempt to undermine preconceived limits to its expressiveness. The subject aligns these works within the tradition of nude portraiture and by challenging the usual expectation of veracity through new media, Reynolds brings a new look to an old compulsion.
3 x 1 is a project series presented to coincide with the Auckland Festival of Photography (4 - 27 June). The preview of Patrick Reynold's Say Yes is part of Gravity Festival Tuesday, a signature event of the Festival. On the 8th June you can view ten photography exhibitions at nine galleries on the Gravity Festival Circuit, in Auckland City.
