Sunrise of Fog and Dreams: André Hemer

23 October - 23 November 2024 Auckland City
Overview
Every painting is fundamentally about light and how we establish image-it's all interwoven in a more subtle way.

Since the early 2000s, André Hemer has emerged as a key figure in the hybrid exploration of contemporary image-making, known for his amalgamations of traditional techniques with modern technologies. This new body of paintings showcases a dynamic evolution, characterized by flat surfaces that shift away from the three-dimensional forms of previous exhibitions.

Over the past six months, Hemer has adopted a more reflexive approach creating a "family" of paintings that continue his dialogue with technology and naturalism. Each piece embodies the exploded nature of generative technology, where image transactions and transformations have transcended linearity to embrace a hyperdynamic method of creation. Sourced from personal archives, these works fluctuate in fidelity, oscillating between the microscopic and the sublime macroscopic, creating a rich tapestry of visual engagement.

His technique, which blends negative brush strokes with airbrush work, creates a fluidity that encourages viewers to engage in multiple dimensions. Director Anna Jackson observes that "Sunrise of Fog and Dreams" feels both intimate and joyful, emphasizing beauty while retaining conceptual depth. It captures the essence of contemporary experience, where originality is fragmented, and art becomes a hyper-fluid interplay of ideas.

Challenging themes of technological engagement and naturalism in his practice, Hemer's latest creations weave a dreamlike tapestry. Influenced by Baroque and Romantic traditions, Hemer engages with a contemporary discourse on perception. As he states, "Every painting is fundamentally about light and how we establish image-it's all interwoven in a more subtle way."  This body of work illustrates how the generative age of digital creation has the potential to radically reshape our understanding of representation - inviting contemplation of the hyperreal in a world on constant transmutations.
