b. 1987, Aotearoa (Te Āti Awa, Ngāti Maru)

Hugo Koha Lindsay has crafted a practice that engages with abstraction-based painting methodologies. He is interested in painting as a means to interpret phenomenological experience, or the ways in which particular spaces might feel rather than appear.

Figure revised no. 12 is a compelling example of his work. It is comprised to two contrasting sides, which are separate pieces of fabric that have been stitched together. This way of working has become a hallmark of Lindsay’s, using the stitch as another form of mark making. The left of the work utilises a few vigorous strokes of paint and graphite markings. On the right, a few sketch-like lines convey a sense of movement towards the outer edges of the picture plane. Composition 10: with notations, additions and subtractions is similarly comprised of two stitched together pieces of canvas, though its composition is more unified across the two halves. This contrasting approach to material and composition showcases the technical and material inventiveness that has made Lindsay one of the rising stars of New Zealand art over the past decade.

Lindsay holds a Master of Fine Arts with first class honours from the University of Auckland. He has received numerous awards and notable recognition including the Kaipara Arts Trust Award (2015), the Parkin Drawing Prize (2015, 2017), the Molly Morpeth Canaday Painting and Drawing Award (2016). He has exhibited across New Zealand and Australia. He has works held in the Tattersfeld Collection, the Arts Trust Collection, the Kunstwerk Sammlung Klein Collection, and private collections throughout Australasia.
