Anne McCahon (nee Hamblett) (1915 – 1993) studied at the Dunedin School of Art in the 1930s. There, she was taught by the influential R.N. Field, and became involved with a local art scene that helped foment New Zealand modernism. It was during countryside painting trips with a group of other artists that Hamblett became acquainted with her future husband, Colin McCahon. Hamblett’s artistic pursuits were significantly constrained as she supported her family and the career of her famous husband, and consequently her own skill and talent as an artist was historically overlooked. Recent years have seen renewed interest in her work, with curators, collectors, and art historians paying greater attention to the strength of her output. Flower Piece from 1939 is a stunning example of the artist’s work. It demonstrates the skill and vision of an important figure in New Zealand modernism.
