Rhona Haszard
1901 – 1931
Born in 1901, Rhona Haszard trained at the Canterbury College School of Arts (now the Ilam School of Fine Arts) alongside artists such as Evelyn Page, Olivia Spencer-Bower, and Rata Lovell-Smith. She set off to Europe in the 1920s, studying and exhibiting in Paris, and travelling widely. She was based for some years in Egypt, where she continued to paint and exhibit. Haszard died from an accident in Alexandria, Egypt in 1931 at the age of 30, cutting short an extraordinarily promising artistic life. Blesmes near Chateau Thierry (The Marne Valley), c.1927, is an excellent example of the artist’s watercolour painting. A satisfyingly restrained depiction of a French landscape, the work conveys the charm of the location, while leaving much of the detail to the viewer’s imagination. The work serves as a noteworthy reminder of a dazzling, but short-lived talent.
