Born and raised in Auckland, Jean Horsley trained at Elam School of Fine Arts, before pursuing further study at the Chelsea School of Art in London. She returned to New Zealand as war broke out in Europe, working as a physical therapist, though she continued to create art. In the 1960s, she returned to London for seven years, exhibiting her work frequently. After this, she spent 15 years in New York, where she encountered the work of leading Abstract Expressionists. The time she spent abroad, amidst some of the greats of modernism proved influential, and she frequently explored modernist approaches to painting throughout her life.
Revisiting Modernism features several examples of Horsley’s work. These paintings demonstrate her explorative approach to abstract art making, and her enduring commitment to her artistic practice.
