Gabrielle Hope (1916 – 1962) was adept in the medium of watercolour. Stylistically, her work could be likened to that of Frances Hodgkins. It is also apparent that she was studied the work of Picasso, drawing on some of the artist’s key motifs – particularly the bull. Art historian Linda Tyler states, “Gabrielle Hope's personal style seems to have been as indelible and expressive as her paintings. In a little over a decade, she rose from the ranks of hobbyists exhibiting at the local art society to being championed as one of the leading exponents of the watercolour medium nationally.” An artist full of promise, Gabrielle Hope lived a relatively short life, dying at the age of 46. This untimely end cut short the creative development and output of a rare talent. The two still life works of Hope’s featured in Revisiting Modernism are testament to the quality of her work.
