Doris Lusk
1916 – 1990
Artist, potter, and influential teacher, Doris Lusk left an indelible mark on the art and culture of 20th Century New Zealand art. Lusk trained in Dunedin in the 1930s, developing a rich understanding of landscape painting under the tutelage of R.N. Field. She made frequent trips to paint landscapes in Central Otago, often with friends and associates, including Anne Hamblett and Colin McCahon. Her landscape paintings often explored industrial themes, and this thread ran throughout her oeuvre. Lusk moved to Christchurch in the 1940s, balancing art making with family life. She later became a lecturer at Ilam School of Fine Arts, where she was an influential teacher. Lusk continued painting throughout her life. Lagoon Rakaia Mouth, 1956, is a landscape work of finely attuned composition. Lusk has approached the work in a measured and uncomplicated way, balancing areas of tight detail and gestural openness with stylistic flair and technical nous.
