Hugo Koha Lindsay
Gow Langsford Gallery are pleased to exhibit new works from young, emerging Auckland artist, Hugo Koha Lindsay. Currently working towards a Master of Fine Arts at the University of Auckland, Lindsay is already making waves with a number of exhibitions throughout the country. Last year, at the 24th Annual Wallace Art Awards, Lindsay won the 2015 Kaipara Wallace Arts Trust Award which included a three-month residency at the Altes Spital in Solothurn, Switzerland.
Labelling himself as an ‘interdisciplinary painter’, it is evident in his works just how he crosses genre, style and choice of medium with a sophisticated ease. Bound by a traditional canvas, Lindsay manages to extend the eye through space beyond the canvas, where areas of geometry bleed and disappear over the edges. Lindsay’s earlier works were more controlled and precise, where his recent works show an evolution in his practice that are more complex, yet still minimal in their manifestation. The spray painted strokes that sweep the canvases are gestural and raw, with a seemingly no holds barred approach that contradicts the crisp and defined areas of contrasting colour. Lindsay’s works are like working drawings, the layers are evident under paint and texture; nothing is hidden but each element adds up to a cohesive whole.
