Tony Fomison
Past exhibition
Overview
This exhibition of works presents the diversity in Tony Fomison’s painting practice through a selection of key works covering a time span of almost thirty years.
Recognised as one of New Zealand’s most notable painters, his works were influenced by the European master paintings he saw in Europe following his art school training in Christchurch. On his return to New Zealand, although the religious subject matter was still a central idea, Fomison’s influences became more localised and his themes expanded to feature Maori prophets, mythical figures, landscapes and Polynesian ancestry.
