In Conversation: Frances Hodgkins: With John Gow and Mary Kisler

7 June 2025
Gow Langsford Auckland City 28-36 Wellesley Street East, Auckland CBD 2:00 - 3:00pm

In celebration of Gow Langsford’s newest City gallery exhibition, join John Gow and art historian Mary Kisler for a discussion on the life and legacy of Frances Hodgkins – one of New Zealand’s most important and internationally celebrated artists of the early 20th century.

A fiercely independent woman living at the turn of the 20th century, Hodgkins dedicated her life to her artistic practice – travelling frequently around Europe, looking at the world around her for inspiration. She developed an excellent reputation in the United Kingdom, France, Australia, and New Zealand, particularly for her skill with watercolour and gouache. While influential during her lifetime, Hodgkins’ stature has continued to grow since her death in 1947.

Mary Kisler MNZM is one of the foremost authorities on Frances Hodgkins, having spent decades researching her life and art. She is the co-editor of Frances Hodgkins: European Journeys (2019), which accompanied a major touring exhibition of the same name, as well as Finding Frances Hodgkins (2019), a personal and insightful travel memoir tracing the artist’s steps through Europe. Drawing on years of scholarship, Kisler and Gow will share stories and reflections on Hodgkins’ development as an artist, the works included in the exhibition Creating Space and her enduring significance in both New Zealand and international art histories.
