Centred within the composition is a vibrant blue roundel inspired by a decorative sakura (cherry blossom) drain cover that Claudia observed during her trip to Japan. Across the country, municipal manhole covers are often designed with distinct local imagery, historical landmarks, or seasonal motifs. In Japanese culture, the cherry blossom is a deeply revered flower that symbolises the fleeting, beautiful nature of life (mono no aware), renewal, and the arrival of spring.
Encircling around the central window is a kaleidoscope of tree nymph butterflies, a species native to the islands of Okinawa. Due to their slow, floating glide, these butterflies are widely viewed as symbols of tranquillity, peace, and the inherent beauty of impermanence. Kogachi incorporates the same butterflies in her work Statue with Ogomadara, 2026.
Continuing with the overarching theme of the exhibition, Claudia hides self-portraits within the surrounding brown bricks.
