The composition centers on a heavy stone archway framing an ornate wrought-iron gate, dominated by a monumental Japanese moon moth. Within Japanese culture, moths carry profound spiritual significance, often understood as embodiments of ancestral spirits or souls journeying between worlds. Due to this deep-rooted spiritual reverence, traditional custom dictates that they must never be harmed, as they are sacred links connecting the physical world to the spiritual realm.
Embedded within the surrounding stone are a series of hidden faces, continuing Kogachi’s recurring practice of weaving self-portraiture into the landscape. Below, a scattering of fallen red leaves rests upon the steps, marking the passage of time and the cycles of transformation that permeate the exhibition.
As one of the only three works in the entire exhibition completely devoid of water, the painting occupies a distinct conceptual space. The dark, vast expanse that extends beyond the gate becomes an enigmatic threshold, inviting contemplation as to what lies beyond. Whether read as an open night sky, an infinite cosmic expanse, or a portal leading into the unseen realm, the painting leaves its destination unresolved .
