In Moon Pond, Kogachi depicts herself in a sstructural stone relief, seated serenely atop a floating lily pad as her hand gently grazes the water's surface beneath her. In her arms, she cradles her sleepy chihuahua, Kiku (菊), whose name translates to “chrysanthemum”. Within Japanese tradition, the chrysanthemum is a revered emblem of longevity and rejuvenation and nobility, whilst longstanding historical associations link it to the Japanese imperial family. Above this portrait, a red moon burns against a pale, nearly white sky, imbuing the composition with a folkloric, oneiric quality that evokes the eerie stillness of solar eclipse.

A monumental rock wall encircles the pond, within which ten subtly rendered faces are hidden. Drifting across the water, vibrant autumnal leaves serve as visual reminders of time passing, whilst white moon moths flitter above, reintroducing a core spiritual motif from the exhibition. Together, these elements ground the work in an overarching meditation on consciousness, transformation and the cyclical rhythms of the natural world .
