Overview
Sculpture [in stone] follows form, in just the same way as plants follow the light. Plants sense the light; they do not create it: they recognise it and feed on it. And just as plants do not invent the light, the sculptor does not invent form; he finds it in objects and continues its process of formation.

Milanese contemporary sculptor Mattia Bosco was born into a family of artists. After pursuing Classical studies, he set up his own artist studio working with ceramics. Whilst the clay medium openly invited his gesture, it was when he began working with the resistance of stone that he found a more genuine dialogue with the material and felt a connection to its long history within art and nature.

Bosco’s practice stems from a philosophical background, with the consideration of the preexisting processes within matter. He intuitively selects natural stone from quarries in the Val d’Ossola mountains of Piédmont and allows its existing form to dictate how he will work with it. By adapting to the geological forms, the act of sculpting becomes an evolution and anthropomorphising of the medium. His work finds balance between concept and form, philosophy and materiality.

Bosco’s work has been exhibited both publicly and privately throughout Europe and further abroad. It has featured in renown institutions the Museum Tinguely in Basel (2015), the Triennale Design and Art Museum in Milan (2010, 2014) and the Diocesano Museum in Milan (2008 and 2015). After earning several artist residencies and awards, in 2015 he was invited to the TEDxVicenza TED talk in Italy and has also been involved in managing contemporary art residency Casa degli Artisti in Milan.

Sydney Contemporary 2024 marks Gow Langsford’s first presentation of the artist’s work.
