Overview

1932–2004, Palmerston North, New Zealand

Patrick (Pat) Hanly (1932–2004) was a celebrated New Zealand artist whose vibrant, expressive paintings explored themes of light, life, and human experience. Born in Palmerston North, Hanly studied at the Canterbury College School of Fine Arts in Christchurch, where he developed a deep appreciation for modernist painting. After traveling to Europe and studying at the Royal College of Art in London, Hanly was exposed to the work of international artists, which significantly influenced his style.

Upon returning to New Zealand in the late 1950s, Hanly became known for his dynamic use of color, abstraction, and recurring motifs of the sun, the sea, and organic forms. His paintings often carried strong environmental and social messages, celebrating the beauty of nature while also reflecting concerns about humanity's impact on the world. A key work in this regard is his series The Fire and Earth (1960s), which exemplifies his interest in both the physical and metaphysical aspects of life.

Hanly’s role in the New Zealand art scene extended beyond his own practice; he was instrumental in shaping the country's modernist movement. He was also an influential teacher at the Elam School of Fine Arts in Auckland, where he mentored a new generation of artists. His mural works and public commissions, showcase his belief in art as an integral part of public life.

Hanly’s legacy continues to resonate in New Zealand’s art world, with his works held in major public and private collections, including Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa and Auckland Art Gallery Toi o Tāmaki. Known for his thought-provoking compositions, Hanly remains one of New Zealand’s most revered modern artists.
