Gow Langsford Gallery will be represented by two stands at the Melbourne Art Fair 2004. Gow Langsford Gallery, Auckland will be showing works by Shane Cotton, Gavin Hipkins, Ralph Hotere and Colin McCahon while Gow Langsford Gallery, Sydney will have works by Tony Cragg, Anthony Goicolea, Megan Keating and Jeff Koons.
Contemporary Maori artist Shane Cotton will exhibit new paintings next to a suite of new limited edition prints completed at the Melbourne Print Workshop. Cotton’s recent painting has been well received by New Zealand audiences after his solo survey exhibitions at Wellington’s City Gallery (2003) and the Auckland Art Gallery (2004). New work was created incorporating signs and motifs seen in previous works, but with a new vision and using new techniques including stencilling and airbrushing. New colour was added – from powder blues to deep reds. The resulting works were resolutely contemporary while linking them to his previous oeuvre. Works from this series were also exhibited in late 2003 at Gow Langsford Gallery – Auckland where they were well received by critics and collectors. Images of this exhibition are enclosed.
Cotton produced a series of six lithographic prints between 1997-1998. The new series created locally at the Melbourne Print Workshop would be launched exclusively at the Melbourne Art Fair 2004 and would be an opportunity for collectors to purchase works by Cotton.
Gavin Hipkins recently travelled to Sydney where he began work on a new series of photographic work based around the local zoo and aquariums. Hipkins is known for his presentation of places and has in fact been described as a ‘cultural tourist’ finding art in everyday objects and situations where others would not - his major eighty-piece work The Homely combined images gathered from both New Zealand and Australia for instance. Work for the Melbourne Art Fair will be a combination of new work and selected The Homely and New Age series prints available in limited editions.
Selected works by senior New Zealand artists Colin McCahon and Ralph Hotere complete the exhibition.
