A substantial collection of portraits of Maori sitters, men and women, in the Carte de Visite format of the second half of the nineteenth century. These portraits were purchased by pakeha New Zealander's and the wider world eager for images of the exotic and of a way of life that was changing fast. Many local photographers sold them and offered repeat copies from the "Negative Kept."
